Friedenau werd gesticht in 1874 en in de burgerlijke idylle vanaf kleine plattelandsvilla's en oude gebouwen met bezienswaardige Jugendstil gevels en voortuinen woonden de afgelopen 100 jaar succesvolle schrijvers, beroemde schilders en beeldhouwers en politici vanaf alle kleuren.
Kom meer te weten over de expressionisten Kirchner, Schmidt-Rottluff, Otto Müller, Ludwig Meidner en Hans Baluschek, die schilderden in fantasierijk ingerichte studio's op daken, en over de binnenplaats vanaf de beeldhouwers, die de bijnaam Klein-Carrar kreeg. Bewonder Kolbe's beeldhouwwerken in de woonwijk Ceciliengärten en leer waarom een illustere groep Duitstalige schrijvers eind jaren '60 en '70 naar de wijk verhuisde om te drinken en te discussiëren in "literaire kroegen en clubs".
Maar de idylle vanaf een kleine stad is misleidend, want politiek gezien was het hier vaak turbulent: luister naar verhalen over de RAF, Rosa Luxemburg, Hermann Göring, Goebbels en Theodor Heuss, maar ook over het politieke verzet vanaf de Rode Kapel. Bezoek tot slot Marlene, Helmut Newton en Jeanne Mammen op hun laatste rustplaats: Begraafplaats Friedenau.
