Northern Lanzarote tour with Green Caves and Jameos del Agua with optional lunch

Larger-than-life Lanzarote legend César Manrique left his imprint all over the island, but nowhere more so than the north. The architect was inspired by the region's extraordinary geology. This tour takes in three iconic sights – the Green Caves, Jameos del Agua and Mirador del Rio. David, one of our local guides, says, "the north of the island was a canvas for Manrique's palette. As he used to say, “the north is still the traditional Lanzarote.”First up are the Green Caves, where a maze of galleries and stairways lead you to a natural auditorium. These caverns – 16 have been discovered so far – are air bubbles that are linked by a tunnel created by the lava flow from a volcanic eruption. During the 1960s, the Cabildo of Lanzarote commissioned Jesús Soto to adapt the cave system for visitors, creating one of the island's most fascinating attractions. The influence of Manrique is, however, even more pronounced in the Jameos del Agua. Here, he harmonised this roofless volcanic cave, adding rock gardens and a glassy lake, filled with blind, white crabs found only in Lanzarote. Also on the agenda is Mirador del Rio, one of Manrique's most sci-fi creations. Not only does this viewpoint blend in seamlessly with its surroundings atop a 470-metre-tall cliff, but it boasts wow-factor vistas across to the island of La Graciosa. Next, you'll head to Haria, an oasis of green known as the “Valley of a Thousand Palms,” scattered with whitewashed houses and surrounded by peaks. If you book the tour option that includes lunch, you'll sit down for a meal made from locally sourced ingredients in a typical Canarian house here, too.

North Lanzarote short tour

You'll fall in love with Lanzarote after this half-day tour of the north as you criss-cross landscapes dotted with whitewashed villages, volcanoes and palm trees. After a stop at Teguise to take in panoramic views, you'll head to the Jameos del Agua volcanic cave, complete with natural underground lagoon where you can keep an eye out for native albino crabs. Then, it's on to see the Green Caves, or Cueva de los Verdes. This ancient cave system was formed up to 5,000 years ago when La Corona Volcano erupted, creating a vast tunnel from lava flows. Cesar Manrique helped to redesign the caves for visitors in the 60s and you'll find his subtle lighting gives the place an otherworldly feel.

Lanzarote tour with Timanfaya National Park and Jameos del Agua

This grand tour of Lanzarote leaves no stone unturned. ‘You'll unearth the secrets of this volcanic island through the eyes of someone who has made it their home,' says Daria, one of our expert guides. Discover the island's spectacular green north and the volcanic south, visiting Timanfaya National Park, Jameos del Agua caves and a winery along the way.The fun starts with a trip to the subterranean salt lake at Jameos del Agua. This ancient volcanic cavern was converted into a bar and concert space by local architectural legend, Cesar Manrique. After lunch, you'll get to find out how grapes are grown at a volcanic soil winery. You'll sample one-of-a-kind local wines from La Geria, a unique wine-growing region created after the Timanfaya volcanic eruptions 300 years ago. Next up is the Salinas de Janubio salt flats where traditional methods are still in use. Seawater enters shallow basins, evaporates under the sun, and workers harvest the salt manually. These salt flats are a haven for migratory and coastal bird species. Thanks to its otherworldly natural landscape, Lanzarote was declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1993. And the star of the show here is undoubtedly Timanfaya National Park. Follow the famous Lunar Route and explore lava fields, volcano craters and steaming geysers as you learn about why the whole island has achieved this special UNESCO-listed status. Then, experience it up close as you feel the heat beneath your feet and witness brushwood burn into flames.

I love La Graciosa catamaran tour

Graceful by name and appearance, La Graciosa is the ‘other' Canary island – one that few ever visit. Lying just a kilometre north of Lanzarote, it's like a different world – there are no cars, so no need for paved roads. And this luxury catamaran cruise is the ideal opportunity to get to know this rustic volcanic island.Board the ferry and cross the El Rio Strait over to the sleepy village of Caleta del Sebo, the larger of the island's two settlements. Explore it at your own pace or with your guide. Next, jump aboard the catamaran – where you'll be handed a mojito – and glide past the island's rugged coastline. You'll head near Playa Francesa beach, which lies in the shadow of the Amarilla volcano, where you'll dive into snorkelling, kayaking, and soaking up the views. Meanwhile, back on board, you'll be served a lunch of paella, washed down with cool drinks. Afterwards, you can take in the views from the deck before catching the ferry back to Lanzarote.

Cesar Manrique’s Lanzarote tour with cactus garden and LagOmar

With its vine-laden lava fields, exuberant architecture and otherworldly landscapes, Lanzarote looks and feels like something from a sci-fi movie set. This exclusive half-day tour takes in the Cesar Manrique Foundation and his Cactus Garden, followed by a visit to LagOmar. Rosa, one of our expert local guides, says, "Manrique convinced his fellow islanders to invest in tourism without overdevelopment, making sure any human impact is in harmony with our volcanic landscapes."Manrique was admired by many in his lifetime, and his influence on Lanzarote's culture lives on. He was a versatile artist producing paintings, sculptures and architectural works, bringing sustainability to the forefront of his creations, long before it became a buzzword. You'll first tour his Jardín de Cactus, where 1,100 species of sculptural succulents are grown. You can see instantly how Manrique's skill and vision enhanced the barren landscape. Similarly, the Fundacion Cesar Manrique demonstrates that harmony between the built environment and nature can succeed. A visit to the artist's home-studio, built into a lava field, is ample proof. Your final stop of the tour will be at LagOmar, a stunning spot that seamlessly combines nature and art. This unique place is set in a volcanic quarry and includes features like a cave-bar, restaurant, and a museum. Local legend has it that Hollywood icon Omar Sharif briefly owned it, only to lose it in a game of cards.

The inside story

Hidden within a volcanic tunnel on Lanzarote’s northern coast, Jameos del Agua is one of the island’s most remarkable attractions. Transformed by César Manrique, this unique space combines nature, art and architecture within a series of lava caves formed thousands of years ago by volcanic activity. Whitewashed walls, tropical gardens and a striking turquoise pool create a setting that feels both natural and carefully designed.

As you explore, you can wander through volcanic chambers, admire the underground lagoon and learn about the geological forces that shaped the island. The site is also home to a rare species of tiny blind albino crab found nowhere else in the world. Despite its inviting appearance, the iconic pool was designed as a work of art and swimming is not permitted.
