The inside story
Boasting an extensive collection of European art masterpieces, the Lyon Museum of Fine Arts (Le Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon in French) is one of the largest and most well-known fine art museums in France.
Stop by this famed museum to see skilfully crafted sculptures and paintings created by acclaimed artists such as Véronèse, Rubens, Rembrandt, Delacroix, and more. Lyon’s Museum of Fine Arts also houses a notable amount of artifacts from Ancient Egypt, including a collection of sarcophaguses.
Facing onto the Place des Terreaux in Lyon, the opulent building that currently houses the Lyon Museum of Fine Arts dates back to the 17th century. Formerly serving as the Royal Abbey where Benedictine nuns lived, the venue was converted into a museum in 1801 and later renovated to its current state between 1988 and 1998.
In addition to the important works of art contained within, Lyon’s Museum of Fine Arts also features a lovely and serene sculpture garden called the Jardin du Palais Saint-Pierre.
